They are an excellent introduction to Byzantine history. Well worth recommending to all your historically inclined acquaintances. Their merit lies in popularizing general Byzantine history though, there isn't much to be learned for one who has a read a few books on the topic.

I have read numerous books on this topic and many primary sources but in English. I have also gone through numerous videos and CD's on this topic. Being half Greek I believe it is important to know our history. You are right it is good for the beginner. For me it was only a good review of what I had already learned.

For me, a big thrill was standing on the old walls of Constantinople and trying to envision 1453 or 1204 in my mind. If 1204 had not happened then I do not think 1453 would have or at least at a later date. To put myself further out on the branch- if 1453 had not happened then 1492 would not have happened - think about it!!!

I should try and get this podcast just for the review.
