Topic: Favorite Baseball Player Posted: 02-Sep-2007 at 02:44 |
Just thought I would ask all the baseball fans out there who their favorite all-time player is. If you can't choose perhaps give your favorite active player and favorite retired player. I am torn on this, but my top three consists of Ty Cobb, Babe Ruth and Ted Williams. (probably in that order)

This is a difficult question for me to answer. I have a lot of favorite players whose careers I follow.
If I had to whittle it down to 3 active and retired players, they would be:
Active
1. Nick Swisher (Oakland Athletics 1B/OF)
2. Ken Griffey, Jr. (Cincinnati Reds OF)
3. Frank Thomas (Toronto Blue Jays DH/1B)
Retired
1. Pete Rose
2. Nolan Ryan
3. Mike Schmidt
Really, for me, the active players are tied with a bunch of others. They could be tied with Adam Dunn, Curtis Granderson, Magglio Ordonez, Sean Casey, Brandon Phillips, Dan Haren, Troy Glaus on any given day.

Some interesting choices out there. Ken Griffey Jr. and Nolan Ryan are some of my favorite recently active players, along with Tony Gwynn and Kirby Puckett. I noticed that both of you have favorites that are fairly recent, within the past 30 years or so. Just curious if its because your knowledge of earlier players is less or simply because they are so far removed from nowadays that none of us here would likely ever have seen them play?

It's hard to call them my favorites if I haven't seen them playing much. I've been watching baseball since late 80's. I've seen footages of past great players but most of my knowledge of them came from reading articles and stat sheets. I would love to see guys like Ty Cobb, Willie Mays, Roberto Clemente, Joe Morgan play. But there are still many great players I haven't mentioned even from recent history like John Olerud, Jeff Bagwell, Marquis Grissom....

Oops, just saw your list there King Kang of Mu, sorry about that. ![Embarrassed](http://www.allempires.com/forum/smileys/smiley9.gif) Bo Jackson was just amazing. Everytime I see that play where he ran up the centerfield wall after making a catch is just incredible.

Rich[whitey] Ashburn, CF Phils 1948-1959 One of the original "Whiz Kids"
I was in Connie Mack Stadium the day he set the consecutive foul ball record, 26 in a row.

Wow, if he played now , he would be going through a couple of middle relievers in one at bat.

I use to be a big fan of garciaparra back when he was in his prime with the red sox. I always thought he was as good as A-rod, perhaps better.

Yes, Garciaparra was being heralded as the next Ted Williams or Wade Boggs in Boston until he got traded and the Red Sox breaks the curse very next season without him. If he was still a part of that WS winning team, he could have been a legend in the hearts of every Bostonians forever. How cruel life can be sometimes. Well at least his wife is more popular than him. While staying in Hollywood he should make an album with K Fed. Ouch.

It actually looks like we (the sox) unloaded Garciaparra at about the right time. While he continues to play well, it seems like he suffered a few injury plagued years. I still remember when he started to get real famous in Boston, everyone was talking about "Nomah"

Yes, he is still a good player but with the injuries and age he is nowhere near the level he once was. I was shocked back when the red sox dumped him, their best player I thought, in hindsight they clearly knew what they were doing.

This is something BE would like to hear again and again. Magglio Ordonez is the holder of this year's American League batting title with an average of .363. Now only if the Tigers could manage to have better pitching next year!

He may like it but I certainly don't. Man what happen to the central division of circa 2003 or so. The twins were good, everyone else was bad. Ah, those were the good old days. Now we're in the toughest division in baseball. Not happy with this development, not happy at all.
Just thought of last year when the the white sox missed the playoffs with something like 90 wins. ![LOL](http://www.allempires.net/smileys/smiley36.gif) Hilarious.

Ordonez did have amazing season. I haven't seen anybody spreading the ball to the opposite field like that since the days of Tony Gwynn and Wade Boggs. Don't forget his 139 RBIs either which is even more amazing when he didn't even hit 30 HRs(28). He did have 54 doubles though. He can thank Granderson, Planco and Shefield for his RBI numbers too. Any other season he would be the AL MVP but A Rod's power numbers outshine his consistency. Plus, Yankees made the playoff in expense of Tigers. Justinian is also right about the AL Central. Tigers have enough young talents to a contender for next several years. Indians suddenly have good pitching with emergence of Carmona combined with Sabathia and Paul Byrd and Cliff Lee. Minnesota will always manufacture runs with their 'Small Ball' style. And White Sox still have enough talents to turn it around. And (I can't believe I'm saying this but) even Kansas City looked tough towards the end of the season. I mean they are not gonna a contender anytime soon but they are good enough to a spoiler. But then again, wasn't that what people were saying about Tigers only two seasons ago? Anyway I predicted Tigers vs Mets in the WS early in the season and neither even made into playoff, so poor me. ![Cry](smileys/smiley19.gif) Hey, Lions? I want to believe.
