Topic: Your Nation's Sporting Heroes past and present? Posted: 14-Sep-2007 at 06:45 |
I started a thread on this elsewhere but I think it may have been shut down because it went a little off topic. Rather than discuss the topic people were more concerned to shout me down for using the word heroes.
So anyway I thought I'd give it another go. So who in your country defines sport? Pictures, Videos, Articles etc welcome!

Colm ' The Gooch' Cooper, Kerry Senior Gaelic Team; Football is something of a religion in Kerry and 'The Gooch' is God. He's probably one of the top players in the country and he's still only 24.
Dan ' The Man' Shanahan[in Blue and Yellow] is the star of the Tipperary Hurling team and almost single-handedly beat Cork in this years All-Ireland Championship Semi-Final
Jason ' Jayo' Sherlock. The veteran Dublin star lead the county to the All-Ireland Final in 1995 and has retained a special in all our hearts ever since. He is a skilled confident player and a real bonus for the team.
Sean Og O'Hailpin is one of Cork Hurlings finest players and indeed one of the finest in the country.

If Knights wants Bradman, the tempting response would be Harold Larwood, but I don't want to start another war
So I'll go for England for the doctor, W.G.Grace. I doubt anybody has ever dominated a sport so much as Grace did.
Sorry, no action pictures

![LOL](smileys/smiley36.gif) ![Tongue](smileys/smiley17.gif) The Bodyline...devious tactic it was! I wouldn't be worried though, I myself am English, thus an English supporter. But for the means of this thread, I live in Australia... Zaitsev - Boonie is a champion!

In case the last few posts have puzzled some people, there's a reasonable article on 'bodyline' at wikipedia.
Looking at it, this was interesting news, at least to me.
Currently, Australian film director and producer Peter Clifton is co-producing The Bloody Ashes, a film which will focus on the Bodyline series. The person chosen to play Bradman will receive six months' intensive acting lessons. An Australian casting agency has been commissioned for the search, while UK casting scouts are hunting for cricketing actors to play English captain Douglas Jardine and his star fast bowler Harold Larwood. Clifton, who wrote the film with his long-time writing partner Michael Thomas, said the decision to search cricket clubs for the young Bradman role came after lengthy discussions with former Australian cricket captain Ian Chappell.[27] Shooting of The Bloody Ashes is expected to commence in 2007.

Gholam Reza Takhti
Born in 1930.08.27, in Tehran and raised in poor circumstances. He trained in a makeshift sports hall until he left Tehran to work as an oil worker. After being drafted into the army he was introduced to freestyle wrestling, He won his first Iranian championship in 1950, and became the first Iranian wrestler to win an international medal when he gained a silver medal in the World Championships at Helsinki in 1951, followed by silver at the Helsinki Olympics. Later he won gold in the 1956 Olympics and the 1959 World championships. Tahkti competed unsuccessfully at the 1964 Olympics and 1966 World championships due to his being chosen for adverse political reasons. Although he had retired from competition, the government of the time attempted to discredit him in the eyes of the people with whom he was extremely popular, particularly from an anti-government stance. Though he lost in the last two competitions his popularity was not diminished. His mysterious death in 1968.01.07 was "officially" listed as suicidal but the popular opinion was one of political assassination by government forces.
