I agree, Sparten. Otherwise, anyone who committed a crime could then go into exile for 10 or 20 years and then return for a slap on the wrist! Not fair!

Adrienne Gerhaeuser was a bomb-making feminist militant plotting to commit acts of terrorism who fled Germany 20 years ago and lived abroad using different identities. She was a member of the Rote Zora (an anti-patriarchal group named after the re-haired Robin Hood-like heroine of the 1941 childrens book Red Zora) who carried out approximately 45 bombings and arson attacks between 1974 and1995. She recently returned to Germany (shes now 58 years old) and turned herself in to authorities and pled guilty to her crimes. She received a suspended sentence in April of 2007, with the court reasoning that shes unlikely to re-offend since her crimes dated almost two decades and the fact that her actions were not for personal gain - thus, allowing her to escape a jail term.
How do you feel about this? Should she get away with crimes she committed when she was young? Why do you think she waited until now to turn herself in? Does the fact that Germany is now led by Angela Merkel, the first female chancellor, have anything to do with her coming out at this time?
