QuoteReplyTopic: The Cossack in Russia ,who are they? Posted: 02-Dec-2006 at 04:57
I heard that Cossacks also acted like a sort of safety valve in Russian society for a long time, the most hot-headed/rebellious people would run off to become Cossacks and not cause trouble in Russia proper ;)
Also did anyone mention that they were very free and rebellious earlier on, but later they were subjugated and only then did they become known for being the shock troops of the Russian empire?
They are known with their toughness and discipline, both on and off the battlefield.
In WW II, the fame of Cossack torturers were known by everybody who had fought out there...
Regarding their ethnicity, the matter is still disputed, whether it was first the Turkic or Slavic elements who came first to settle the original birthplace of Cossacks, the plains around rivers of Don,Volga and Dniester.

Your hope would be enough;

we made up sorrows for ourselves;

I think the WORDS kazar, kazak, cosak has comon origin. In slavic languages they meant mounted robber.
May be the words hussar, courser(eng.) has the same origin.
Kasars called themselves: sabir. (Konstantinos Porphirogenitos: sabartoi asfaloi)
Thr turkish word, which means 'free man' should give an other solution.
No az nem gy volt. Kazars called themself kazars. The name has a funny story; it is borned from Cesar, like the german Kaiser. It became in the steppe a"greath", brave", "king-like" meaning. (Vsry Istvn: A rgi Belső-zsia trtnete)
One time the name of the magyars was sabir and sabartoi.
But kossack could have a kazar origin. Some kipchaks could be the "grandfathers" of the cossachs too.
