Topic: Muscle Machines, The Steam Age Posted: 17-Aug-2012 at 20:37 |
Nick - you may find this of interest. It was called a "steam horse locomotive" and was designed for Santa Clara, California to get around a town ordnance that forbade machines that frightened the horses. It was intended to use a steam rotary engine, but never got past the design stage. It had a bell mounted on the head, however, since that would have been a requirement for all locomotives. ![](http://i465.photobucket.com/albums/rr19/MountainMan01/steamhorse1.jpg) Incidentally, here is pair of steam tractors hauling a wagon train across the Mojave Desert - hardly where you would expect to find them being used due to the fuel and water requirements!

Nick - are you familiar with Steam Punk? Here is a steam-powered corkscrew: ![](http://i465.photobucket.com/albums/rr19/MountainMan01/946_xevr.jpg)

Most people saw a prime example of steam punk and never recognized it in Back To The Future III - Doc Brown's ice cube maker in his blacksmith shop.

![](http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/cc312/ctlr600/Gottlieb_Daimler_motorcycle_580x.jpg) Mountainman, a lot of the early vehicles could be classified as steampunk. This motorcycle was built by Gottleib Daimler in the 1880s

Quite true, although I prefer the motorcycle built with a radial aircraft engine, myself.

![](http://i292.photobucket.com/albums/mm12/kschnelle/other_diecast/BRUMMCugnotFardier1769.jpg) The first steam-powered road vehicle: Nicolas Cugnot's 1769 artillery tractor. It wasn't a success as it was difficult to steer and demolished the arsenal wall.

How many people do you suppose realize that a nuclear aircraft carrier is still a steam ship? ![Cool Cool](smileys/smiley16.gif)

I suppose it would be as the turbine is driven by water vapor heated by the nuclear reactor

More interestingly, so are nuclear submarines. The only thing the nuclear reactor does is provide a more efficient way to heat water into steam.
Of course, that "efficiency" comes with a prohibitively hefty technological price tag.

![](http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e10/jaycee_lyn/Stanley%20Hotel/StanleySteamer.jpg) The Stanley steam car successfully competed with early petrol vehicles. These were produced until the 1920s

Jay Leno has one of those that works, IIRC. He also has two stationary steam engines.

![](http://i223.photobucket.com/albums/dd320/rgbai/DSCF0588.jpg) Steam shovel of the type used to dig the Panama Canal. Invented in the mid-19th century, many were still in use until the 1950s, when diesel-powered excavators like the JCB replaced them

![](http://i316.photobucket.com/albums/mm322/Lazy-Ferret/GDSF2008/lorry2.jpg) These steam lorries could carry heavier loads than horses and early petrol-driven trucks. They weren't retired until the 1920s, when large numbers of cheap army surplus lorries came onto the market

Foden and Sentinel were the leading manufacturers of steam wagons, but increasingly restrictive legislation in the 1930s put most companies out of business, or forced them to switch to petrol-driven vehicles
