-Battle of Marathon 490 B.C-
A memorable battle in the first Persian invasion of Greece, Marathon, rendered the a significant victory for the Athenian/Plataean forces. The large Persian centre broke the Greek centre early on in the battle. The Athenian/Plataean flanks then surrounded the Persian army. The Persians were compressed to a smaller and smaller force, until they retreated to their fleet. The Greeks chased the Persians back to their ships, slaughtering any remaining Persian warriors. Some Persian men ran to the swamps to take refuge or because they were unaware of Greek terrian, many of them drowned in the process. The Greeks captured seven Persian triremes before the Persians had the chance to retreat to the seas, although, not a single Persian ship was sunk.
Great example of close combat infantrymen (Greek) against long ranged missile troops (Persian).
