Today, two leaders of the Central African Empire/republic were overthrown two years apart, one in 1979, and the other in 1981.
Overthrow of Emperor Bokassa, Septemeer 20, 1979
The land of the Central African Republic was a French colony since
1903. In 1958, French hold in the area, called the Federation of French
Equitorial Africa, was dissolved. One of the countries that came out of
this conglomeration was the Central African Republic.
Dacko
was its first president. However, as always, the region lacked
stability. In 1966, Colonel Bokassa led a coup that overthrew the
government led by Dacko. Bokassa abolished the constitution and became
the de facto ruler of the country. Years later, he declared himself
President for life. That was not enough, however, as he then went on to
declare himself Emperor. The republic was officially renamed as a
Monarchy, known as the Central African Empire. The change was
accompanied by a gradiose $20 million coronation event. In 1979, 100
children were killed by government forces for protesting. It was
claimed that Bokassa himself took part and even at the flesh of the
children. For such atrocities, the French dropped their support for
Bokassa, allowing a coup backed by French paratroopers to overthrow
Bokassa. Dacko was reinstated as president.
Overthrow of President Dacko, September 20 1981
Although he had returned to power, Dacko was unable to securely hold
onto his seat. After winning the a close election in March 1981, Dacko
tried to disband opposing political parties. However, he was ousted
from power in September by Andre Kolingba. Since then, the country has
never had much long-term stability.
