On
September 29,1941 ten days after the occupation of the city, German Special SS Commandos, "Einsatzgruppen" began with the mass execution of the Jewish population of Kiev.
A notice was posted all over town ordering the Jewish citizens to assemble:
All Jews living in the city of Kiev and its vicinity are to report by 8 o'clock on the morning of Monday, September 29th, 1941, at the corner of Melnikovsky and Dokhturov Streets (near the cemetery). They are to take with them documents, money, valuables, as well as warm clothes, underwear, etc.
Any Jew not carrying out this instruction and who is found elsewhere will be shot.
Any civilian entering flats evacuated by Jews and stealing property will be shot. |
In the believe that they were to be deported, the Jews followed the order. But the Nazi-Germans had very different plans.
In the two following days more than 33.000 men, women and children were massacred by machine guns squads of the SS and Ukrainian collaborators in the Babi-Yar ravine just outside Ukraines capital.
It has been estimated that until 1943 a further 70.000 Jews, Roma, Ukrainian citizens, Soviet POWs and others were executed and buried in Babi Yar.
