It's more likely the Bolsheviks funded themselves. Stalin led violent bank raids during the Russian Civil War and Lenin was supported by the Germans |
Their funding was probably pretty diverse and included:
-Robberies
-Willing contributions At the end of the day, the Bolsheviks did have a certain level of popular support. In China, peasant women routinely contributed small pieces of silver jewelry to Mao's Long Marchers. The jewelery was melted down into bullion
-Bonds Some Soviet red groups actually issued capitalistic government bonds complete with payment coupons). Think of the irony

-Taxes Mao's group set up a formal government in a remote "liberated" area. Taxes were collected and used to fund a variety of activities. One of which was building a big red ceremony hall with electricity ( a big "wow factor" in 1930s rural china) to impress recruits during swearing in rituals, rallies etc.
