Topic: 300,000 Russian citizens in Estonia Posted: 06-Aug-2005 at 11:48 |
I have always thought of the local Russian minority as a pest for the country. But i have been supportive for the minority that it should have its newspapers, TV programs, channels, schools and so on. I honored their stay here.
Now i have found out something new to myself. I don't know if everyone knows this already. Well, the constitution of the Russian Federation from 1991. November 28 states, that every Russian that was born on todays Russias soil or even whose parents or grandparents were born on modern Russias soil, are lawfully the citizens of the Russian Federation. All of the Russians who were living on USSR soil in other countries than the Communist Russia, as for example Estonia, are today, lawful Russian citizens.
So, Estonia should have about 300,000 plus people living here unlawfully. Any thoughts?

Do they have double nationality? What's their oficial status in
Estonia? Most countries allow double nationality but this is up to each
state. If Estonia does not allow double nationality they should chose
between either one and those with foreign papers, would have to abide
to the imigration laws of the country and the bilateral agreements
between Russia and Estonia.

Well, i found the Citizenship Law which wac accepted in 1995. January 19. It goes like this(in my translation): "An individual, who gains the citizenship of another country, other then Estonian, by birth, must within three years from the day he is 18, either give up Estonian or the other countries citizenship."
Section 2 gives the conditions of gaining Estonian citizenship:
1) Is gained on birth
2) Is gained by naturalization
Now, most Estonian webpages i found said that double nationality doesn't exist in our constitution, but i really didn't find the official state page. So it isn't solid, but quite sure that double nationality does not exist in Estonia.
And the fact seems to be, that Estonia has about (?)170,000(?) people living here without citizenship and most likely they are Russian speaking people.

Well, most countries have much more (millions) of illegal inmigrants...
it's the sign of our times. Still, I guess that the Russian govenrment
could use the Russian minority (legal or ilegal) to interfere in your
inner affairs... but guess that's not the fault of Russian-Estonians
either but of Putin.

Yes, Putins policy right now is to make us look as a sort of an undemocratic country with repressions against the Russians. He is spreading the word around quite rapidly. A few days ago, he told the Finnish president on a meeting, that Estonia craves a big part of Russian territory, what a laugh. We could just aswell go and demand land from Australia, or Zimbabwe and he knows it. A true bastard, that Putin.
Yes, the modern day Russians in Estonia aren't guilty, exept the ones who came here on their own free will during USSR maybe are.
But now we have a situation where local Russians demand more power in running our affairs and so on. It is very tempting to say to them that you can go run things two hundred miles eastward with alot more people like you there waiting. But i don't think anyone would want to return to Russia after living in an even slightly wealthier country without 5 year old drug addicts running across the streets.
But i have to say this - i wouldn't be happier about anything else then the leaving of 200 or 300,000 Russians to their native land.

Wait, could you give me that constitution page. For, if I understood it correctly then:
Et kui niteks inimese X vanaisa sndis Vene-Eestis siis tema ja kik tema lapsed ja lapselapsed on venelased?
vi hoopis:
Need kes tulid enne 20.08.1991 Venemaalt venelaste hulgast (seal vist kedagi tesist polegi) siia, peavad vhemalt 20.08.2012 kodakontsuse otsustama?
I just could make myself clear enough to speak in English.

Vene phiseadusest, vaid SL htulehe artiklist. Sama peva omast mil ma
postitasin, ehk siis 6. augusti omast. Ei tea kui usaldusvrne see on,
aga ega ma usu, et seal phiseaduste kohta valetatakse. Lahe oleks igas
tahes kui kik eesti-venelased oleksid lihtsalt venelased.
Yes, those uninhabited eastern regions of Russia that have been
unsuccesfully been colonized for centuries, but for some reason, have
mostly failed with far too deadly results. Then again, if you can't pay
the taxes you can join the great Russian mafia and have meetings with
some Asian "poppie merchants" once a month to spread flowery joy for
the entire Europe. Should i laugh acctually???

Well, the Estonian population was around one million during the entire
20th century, or around that. Now it is just about 1 million. We would
have much more Estonians here, but the communist regime here resutled
in 180,000 people lost as dead of repression, or of migrating to the
Western countries. I myself have a great uncle in Canada.
I am personally glad that i don't live in Tallinn.

And another big problem is that in 1343-1346, Germans killed most of our population. The number is thought to be around 50,000 to 150,000, i think.
