The following post contains a number of images that may disturb and upset!

On September 29,1941 ten days after the occupation of the city, German Special SS Commandos, "Einsatzgruppen" began with the mass execution of the Jewish population of Kiev.
A notice was posted all over town ordering the Jewish citizens to assemble:

All Jews living in the city of Kiev and its vicinity are to report by 8 o'clock on the morning of Monday, September 29th, 1941, at the corner of Melnikovsky and Dokhturov Streets (near the cemetery). They are to take with them documents, money, valuables, as well as warm clothes, underwear, etc.
Any Jew not carrying out this instruction and who is found elsewhere will be shot.
Any civilian entering flats evacuated by Jews and stealing property will be shot.

In the believe that they were to be deported, the Jews followed the order. But the Nazi-Germans had very different plans.
In the two following days more than 33.000 men, women and children were massacred by machine guns squads of the SS and Ukrainian collaborators in the Babi-Yar ravine just outside Ukraines capital.
It has been estimated that until 1943 a further 70.000 Jews, Roma, Ukrainian citizens, Soviet POWs and others were executed and buried in Babi Yar.

Instead of any more words, pictures that speak for themselves:

The Babi Yar ravine near Kiev, Ukraine

Jewish people on their way out of Kiev

Jewish children and women being assembled for execution

Jewish women being led to their execution. Other women, in the background, are surrendering their possessions to the Germans.

Jewish women are forced to undress before being murdered. SS soldiers and Ukrainian collaborators are watching.

Undressed women, some with their babies, in queue to be killed.

German soldiers shooting their victims

German soldiers killing women who survived the machine gun fire

German soldiers looking for valuables amongst the murdered Jews.

Soviet POWs are forced to exhume the bodies of the murdered in order to remove the evidence

The memorial for the Babi Yar victims.

Well I for one have looked about for important events on this day but have usually been led to the conclusion that very little of historical note occured. But I have been pleased to find an exception or two:

106 BC - Pompey the Great born.
