Topic: Would monarchy be good in America? Posted: 09-Dec-2005 at 12:16 |
Do think the United States would make a good constitutional monarchy. Many consider the President a elected monarch. What do you think of the so called Emperor Norton (1819-1880) of the United States?
You can find some information about Joshua A. Norton at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emperor_Norton

No, I don't think Americans would like that very much. We're too tied to the idea that the only legitimate source of power is election and not blood.

A monarchy is always nice but, in America, who would you choose?
It seems John F. Kennedy Jr. would be King, and he (sadly) is no longer
with us. The most obvious choice for Queen is Paris Hilton, but who
would want to live under the rule of a kinky, sexually liberated,
fairly ignorent blonde bimbo who films all her escapades...Genghis?

If the US were really to want to be a monarchy (it accept it wouldn't ) then the obvious course would be to tear up the declaration of independence, accept that George III's villainies are a thing of the past and return to its natural home in the Commonwealth, along with Australia and Canada and New Zealand and South Africa and the rest.
I'm sure the Queen would allow her subjects, once back into the fold, to keep what democratic institutions they have, and appoint the Governor-General or Viceroy of their choice.
It's not as though the American press would have to give any more coverage to the Royal Family than they do already.

I don't speak for other Americans, but this proud American is against a monarchy in the U.S. However, I'll bet most Americans will agree with me on that!

No
A monarchy is good nowhere. It's an undemocratic, illogical waste of money that does nothing exept causing scandals.

America's actually the closest western country to an absolute monarchy at the moment. No other country puts anything like so much power over the country in the hands of a single man. So in many ways a throwback to royal rule. The president also receives adulation by many closer to a king, certainly more than any prime minister or president of any other western country. He is also protected from the kind of criticism and confrontation from press and other politicians when in press conferences or those pseudo political debates candidates have.
I always tend to think of the US president as an elected temporary king.

You are very right, the United States does have one of the strongest executive branches in the world except for countries that are outright dictatorships, we tend to have taken the Hamiltonian path in that respect.

Absolute monarchy in the modern age is no longer practical in an industrialized nation.
Constitutional monarch requires tradition for the monarchy. But America doesn't have that tradition.
So no Monarchy for the United States.
Paul, that's only compared to western countries (as you said). Most of the world's countries aren't western countries.

Monarchy had it's time and is just a (mostly) popular relic in some nation states. Constitutional monarchy is fine in societies where it works, but that is not in the Western Hemisphere.
I always thought monarchy began to die out as a dynamic political instrumentality when kings stopped leading their armies in person. Frederick the Great was the last dynastic king to do so; Bonaparte the last great soldier monarch. After that, the king hung out with the staff drinking champagne and kibitzing while professional military technocrats did all the directing, and professional subordinates led the field armies.
With the prime minister running the government, there wasn't much left for the king to do.

Indeed. Pretty amazing.
Though most (if not all) conservatives in the Netherlands (and I think
in other European monarchies as well) are strongly pro-monarchy.
Which shows that monarchism is mainly appeal to tradition. Some time a
monarchy has been abolished nobody cares about it any more, not even
conservatives.

We would have to do as all the balkan states did and get a German princeling to found a new dynasty. That would piss off all the Americans of other national descent, and would result in a hundred lawsuits.

For all the political controversy in the USA, perhaps a royal family could be a focal point of unity and a reminder of American virtues. Of course, it would require a family of people who are happy to forgo less lofty pleasures and act like robots. But with all the mudslinging in the two party system of the USA, a focal point of unity and reminder of core values may be beneficial.
Aside from that dubious plus I don't see many others in the idea of a US monarchy. It has a much higher chance of doing harm rather than good.

It wouldnt work with the US, it just isnt compatible with the United States.
Britain has a long royal tradition and the monarchy is generally supported, the scandals are relatively common, but more often than not blown totally out of proportion by a media that can make something out of nothing based on hearsay more often than not.
The whole Prince Harry Nazi armband thing was just way over the top, really worthy of international coverage? I think not. I wonder more why we bother having a tabloid media in this country when all they are interested in is exposing *scandals* and crushing celebrities after lifting them up. Its painful reading is this all they have to say?
For Britain I think the monarchy does more good than bad, just wouldnt be the same without it, makes us that bit different, nothing wrong with abit of pomp and ceremony. Its the British way
It'd just be ridiculous to attempt to have a monarchy ruling over the US again.

If you're in the market for a few middle class Germans from a small town, we could give you one or two, with on the job experience and fully house (or palace) trained.

Monarchy would never work in the United States of America. What was the very system that the Americans rebelled against? It was the tyranny of monarchy. The whole American revolution was fought against it and that rebellion is the reason why the United States of America exists today. I do not think any American really wants a monarchy to begin with. It has been an object of scorn and a monarchy, constitutional or not only works in countries with traditions of it. "Hollywood Celebrety cult and the Whitehouse thrown into one? *shivers*"-Cywr. I couldn't agree with you more.
