In 1914, Franz Ferdinand - the heir to the Austrian throne - was
murdered along with his pregnant wife, Sofia, while celebrating their
wedding anniversary in Sarajevo.
The culprit with a pan-Slavic nationalist, who happened to be Serb, but
Croats and Bosniaks were also part of the Young Bosnia organization
that sponsored the assassination.
The event sparked the Great War of 1914-1918 and forever changed
relations between Austria and Serbia, which the former blamed for the
murders. It also, however, strained relations between Austria and
Bosnia and Herzegovina.
But now...
it would seem time heals all wounds.
Here an Austrian delegation poses with Sarajevo Mayor, Semiha Borovac
(far right) - as they present her with two portraits - one of Franz
Ferdinand and the other of his wife Sofia.
All smiles, everybody's happy - this isn't ironic at all. ;)
