Apperently Romans knew a primitive form of nanotechnoglogy.
In 1950's the British Museum got a 1,600 year old chalice that when the cup is lit from the front it is jade green, but when it is lit from behind it glows blood red. In the 1990's reshearchers have found tiny bits of silver and gold in the glass. The particles so small they were just 50 nanometers in diameter.
