true, there is even a thriving korean population in places such as kazakhstan

That's the result of a tragic immigration policy of Stalin, who thought that since Koreans were east asian, they would be more likely to side with their east asians(The Japanese) than europeans(Slav russians), so he basically moved koreans out of the east and put them on the west.  In big masses.
