Marie-Sgolne Royal was elected by members of the Socialist Party as their candidate for the 2007 French presidential election. Unfortunately, she lost her bid to be Frances first female head of government. According to an Ipsos poll, 48% of the women voted for Royal, meaning that 52% percent supported the victorious, Nicolas Sarkozy. As one of the main women's issue in France is physical abuse,IMO, I think Sarkozy received a larger womens vote because, last year, he supported the passage of a law giving the court authority to order abusive spouses and partners out of the house. In the past, and often with no resources of their own, abused women had no option but to leave their homes. Lets hope that Mr. Sarkozy keeps proving himself worthy of the womens vote.

And you would have been wrong. French women have always been leaning pretty much on the right. They usually vote at 60-55% for the rightist candidates. That's the reason why the left didn't give the right to vote to the female population in 1936.
Concerning Royal she was competing for the position of head of state, not head of government (ie prime minister, which position Edith Cresson has already occupied in the 1990s).
Royal had the favour of the youth, the urban, the active persons but despite the fact that polls promised her a large win 6 months ago she didn't manage to outwitt, outtalk and finally outcompete Sarko. She ultimately proved fairly disapointing to many.
Being a woman's good but ain't enough.

Great news, Maharbbal! On May 18th, Agence France Press reported that the new French president, Nicolas Sarkozy, appointed seven (7) women to his 15-member cabinet. These women will oversee ministries of the interior, justice, agriculture, education, culture, health, your and sports, and social cohesion. Mr. Sarkozy is wise to do this since he got a majority of the womens vote. Keep up the good work, Mr. Sarkozy.
