Iran is one of the oldest civilizations in Asia and has influenced its neighbors. Iran has also been conquered by various non-Iranian people. What if Altaic conquerors of Iran were able to make Iranians Altaic speakers. It would be interesting to speculate the geopolitical effects of a Mongolian or Turkish speaking Iran. I understand the relationship between Mongolian and Turkish languages is not certain but for the sake of convenience we could regard them belonging to one language family. Of course there is no guarantee that a Turkish Iran would be a part of modern day greater Turkey but if it were it would be a very strong nation with great strategic depth. Whats your opinion? |

At least one half of the people of Iran speak Turkic language, in fact Iran has the second largest population of Turks after Turkey, however the official language is Persian but in some regions, especially in the northwestern part of the country, there are villages and even cities that people can't speak Persian. -------------

| After the Persians, the Azari Turks come in second place in term of number in Iran, with Kurds being the third place. Hence the Turkish culture has had some effect on the Iranian people more or less, but linguistically, I believe Persians have preserved their language pretty well and away from the Turkish Altaic effect. |

Maybe Iran would have been part of greater Arabia? Actually, culturally speaking, Iran was and is somewhat today still part of greater Arabia. (70 % of "persian" lexicon is arabic). There is no greater Iran. |

Culturally, Iran is very different from its Arab neighbors. And there is a Greater Iran (this Iran is not a reference to the country, its a reference to all places influenced by Iranic cultures and civilization). ------------- I use CAPS for emphasis, not yelling.
