Please share the national flag of your country and share what it represents. If you like, also share some flags for different regions.

Bosnia and Herzegovina

The building above is one of three Presidential Palaces in Sarajevo; this one serves as the parliament of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, which covers 51 per cent of the territory of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The flag on the right is the new flag of Bosnia and Herzegovina:

The golden triangle represents Bosnia and Herzegovina's three main peoples: Bosniaks, Bosnian Croats, and Bosnian Serbs. The stars and colors represent Europe and were chosen by the United Nations since, at the time, our parliament could not agree on a design.

The flag on the left is the flag of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina:

The green shield with the Lillicum Bosniacum represents Bosniaks, or Bosnian Muslims. The red and white checkered shield represents Bosnian Croats. Each of the 10 white stars represent a county in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The color white is meant to represent peace, and the color blue is meant to represent the full state of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Here a few more of Bosnia's flags, from throughout history:

Medieval Bosnia:

This is the flag of King Tvrtko, Bosnia and Herzegovina's most powerful medieval King. It was also used during the 1992-1995 war.

During the Ottoman Empire

During Bosnia and Herzegovina's brief period of independence between the Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian Empires, the country used two different flags.

Bosnia (1878):

Herzegovina (1878):

The Yugoslav Socialist Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina:

Bosniak flag:

This is the flag most Bosniaks will bring to political rallies, weddings, funerals, and so on.

Hi Mila!

Why did king Tvrtko use Fleur-de-Lys in his coat of arms?? It is the sign of the Capets. Was he related to them? (Maybe with the Hungarian Anjous?)

The Ikurrina is the oficial flag of the Basque Autonomous Community and also the National flag of the Euskal Herria (the Basque Country) that stretches well beyond the borders of this region. It was invented by Luis and Sabino Arana, founders of the Basque Nationalist Party and it is now accepted as the common flag of all Basques (except by some in Navarre that do not considere themselves Basques anyhow).

The symbolism was chosen as follows: the red background represents the land, the green St. Andrew's cross represents traditions (including Basque laws) and the white cross represents Christianity. Despite its ideological meanings it's been widely accepted by all, including Atheists and Marxists.

Other traditional Basque flag is that of Navarre, whose shape inspired the Ikurrina:

Other traditional Navarrese flag/emblem is the Black Eagle (Arrano Beltza), as used by early Navarrese monarchs:

The one in the middle over yellow background is used occasionally as banner.

Even Spanish fascists decided to use it once, on occasion of a lonely visit to Bilbao (well protected by the police).

The territories don't have flags properly, but they do have heraldic symbols. Yet I have only found one, that of Biscay, with the sacred oak of Gernika:

Yet, you can see all them in the Zazpiak Bat (Seven in One), the unified cote d'arms of Euskal Herria:

The oficial emblem of the BAC was originally called the Laurak Bat (Four in One) but due to political pressure the symbol of Navarre was removed, leaving just an empty red canton:

The official flag of the Republic of Hungary:

This flag is also widely used (even by State Authorities), but not official:

Recently some MP's have an idea to made the second flag official state flag while the first become the national flag, but no one really interested in this question.

The red and silver/white originates from the Coat of Arms of the Arpad dinasty. (In the Heraldic right side of the today coat of arms) The origin of this coat of arms is unknown. Probably it was inspired by the coat of Arms of Aragon. (When it appeared the king's wife was an Aragon princess). These three colours together first appeared in the chancery of Matthias I. Corvinus (ruled 1458-1490). The green comes from the green mound of the state coat of arms with the patriarchal cross.

The tricolor first appeared in the 1848 revolution. It symbolises strengh (red), faithfulness (white) and hope (green).

It's not the Fleur-de-Lys actually. It's the Lillicum Bosniacum, a type of lily that exists only in Bosnia and Herzegovina. This symbol evolved as a symbol of Bosnia completely independent of outside influence. It's nothing more than a weird coincidence.

The Swedish flag - Svenska Flaggan - originates from the late 15th century, when a blue or black bottom with a golden cross was used in the national arms by the king Karl Knutsson. This was later used as a banner by the 16th century Vasa-dynasty kings, who used it as a banner for the navy. The flag was used exclucivly by the Royal family and navy 'til the late 19th century, when ordinary people got permission to hoist the flag

The flag symbolize a golden christian cross on a blue sky

The Sámi flag - Sámileavga - is used by all sámi in Norway, Sweden, finland and Russia. It was designed and adopted in august 15, 1986. The Blue, red, yellow and green colors of the flag are taken from the Sámi folkcostume. The cirkle represents the sun and the moon - the blue half is the moon and the red is the sun

In this case it must be some antecedent. Was it used by other kings before king Tvrtko?

The lily, draw that way, appears even in Minoan Crete, though not in heraldry. Not sure if this may help.

THE FLAG OF GREECE

"The pattern and colors of the Greek Flag haven't changed a lot since the Revolution of the Greek Nation in 1821. Many people wonder why the founders of the Hellenic Democracy have chosen the symbols, patterns and colors that appear on the National Flag of Greece. It is difficult to unreveal the true intentions of the people responsiblefor the selection of the flag. This is a personal attempt to interpret thedesigns and colors of the flag and its relation to Greece and Hellenism".

THE DESIGN AND PATTENS OF THE FLAG

"The number of the lines is based on the number of the syllables in the Greek phrase: Eleutheria H Thanatos (Freedom or Death)".

FREEDOM OR DEATH

"Freedom or Death was the motto during the years of the Hellenic Revolution against the Ottoman Empire in the 19nth century [There are claims that the number of lines reflects the number of letters in the greek word for Freedom which equals 9]. This word stirred theheart of the oppressed Greeks, it created intense emotions and inspired them to fight and gain their freedom after 400 years of slavery.

The line pattern was chosen because of their similarity with the wavy sea that surounds the shores of Greece. The interchange of blue and white colors makes the Hellenic Flag on a windy day to look like the Aegean Pelagos. Only the quaint islands are missing! The Greek Square Cross that rests on the upper left-side ofthe flag and occupies one fourth of the total area demonstrates the respect and the devotion the Greek people have for the Greek Orthodox Church and signifies the important role of Christianity in the formation of the modern Hellenic Nation.

During the dark years of the Ottoman rule, the Greek Orthodox Church helped the enslaved Greeks to retain their cultural characteristics: the Greek language, the Byzantine religion and generally the Greek ethnic identity, by the institution of the Crypha Scholia (hidden schools).

The Crypha Scholia were a web of schools that operated secretly throughout Greece and were committed in transmitting to the Greeks the wonders of theirancestors and the rest oftheir cultural heritage. Today, Christianity is still the dominant religion among Greeks. Therefore the existence of the Cross is justified."

THE COLORS OF THE FLAG

"Blue and White! These two colors symbolize the blue of the Greek Sea and the Whiteness of the restless Greeks waves!According to the mythic legends, the Goddess of Beauty, Aphrodite emerged from these waves. In addition, it reflects the blue of the Greek Sky and the White of the few clouds that travel in it. There are some who suggest that the blue and white was symbolizes the similar color of the clothing (vrakes) of the Greek sailors during the Greek War of Independence."

Cyrus the great flag:

Darfashe Kaviani:

The first reference to Iranian flag can be traced back to a mythological mutiny launched by Kawah, the blacksmith, against Zohak, the notoriously tyrant ruler of the time. To spearhead the rebellion, Kaveh had no other choice but to have his own leather apron uplifted upon a lance. As a result of this upheaval, Zohak was ousted and Feridoun enthroned.

King Feridoun later ordered the auspicious leather  standard to be cased in rich brocade of yellow, red and pink colors and jewels hung upon it . He also decreed the flag to be called The Royal Darafsh (flag in Old Persian), hence, Darafsh-e Kaviyan. As such, there was no figure, of any kind, on the flag. It was just a colorful combination of yellow, red and pink silk which, based on historical evidences, remained the national and military flag of Iran in the times of the Achaemenians and Sasanians.

Every king would add to the jewels attached to the darafsh. When Arab Muslims invaded Iran, the darafsh was seized in a bloody battle fought around Nahavand (a city with the same name in today’s Hamadan province in the mid-western Iran) and taken, among many other war spoils including the well-known Baharestan Rug, to the headquarters of Omar-ibn-e Khatab, the second Caliph of Muslims after the demise of Muhammad. Astounded by the great number of precious stones and jewels attached to the darafsh, he ordered his soldiers to burn it after removing off the priceless staff.

The image “http://uqconnect.net/~zzhsoszy/states/islamic/FLAG_iran.jpg” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.
Offical Flag:

The Iranian Flag became a four-cornered rectangle during the reign of Agha Mohammad Khan. The triangular shaped Flag therefore, as “inspired” from the Tazian (Arab) invasion of nearly a millennium earlier, was finally put to oblivion. This king is the one who integrated in the two-edged ”Ali” sword as it had appeared
in certain Safavid era Flags with the lion and the sun, thus the lion, sun and sword as we still have it integral of the Flag today. The sword was always regarded as a symbol for power, justice and people’s resistance, and thus had socio-cultural but equally significant religious meaning. It was during the Mohammad Shah reign that the three colored flag (horizontal equal stripes of green on top, white in the middle, and green on bottom) and a lion, sun and sword as inscribed or evolved in our history for at least over 2500 years, was officially chartered as the Flag representing the Nation of Iran (Persia) worldwide. During Naseer-eddin Shah, the crown, as it had for a short period been accepted, was removed, presumably to differentiate the national Flag from the monarchy. Mozaffar-eddin Shah officially endorsed the Mashrootiat (Monarchy system) as adopted in part from the French and Belgian systems of government and consistent with the unique cultural and religious traditions in the country. The new 1906 Constitution cites in its Fifth Amendment Article: The Official Flag of Iran is the three striped colored green-white-red with a lion and sun in its center. No mention of the royal crown is cited.

http://www.persianmirror.com/culture/history/pahlavi.cfm"> This Flag remained the official Flag during the reign of Pahlavi. During the Pahlavi reign, a royal light blue Flag with a royal emblem (right) was developed for the sole purpose of representing the Pahlavi family. During the latter decades of the Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, the three-colored only Flag without the lion, sun and the sword was regarded as the National Flag (Melli) and employed by the retailers, private sectors and non-governmental organizations.

Islamic Revolution:

In 1979, the newly established Islamic republic of IRAN removed the lion and the sun, and replaced it with a calligraphic Arabic word design in the Flag center that could either be read as “Allah” (GOD) and or Laelaha Ellallah (there is no God but one almighty God). Then, the word Allaho Akbar (God is the greatest) was placed eleven times along the white stripe in both the green and the red sections, for a total of 22 times to signify the 22nd of Bahman, the day of the “Islamic Republic” founding. For a short period in 1979-80, this was the sole flag of Iran. The same had also been regarded as the National flag of Iran during the Pahlavi rein.

Malaysian Flag

The Malaysian flag is known as 'Jalur Gemilang' (Glorious Stripes)

The Malaysian flag, named Jalur Gemilang with effect from August 31 1997, consist of 14 red and white stripes of equal width, a union of carton of dark blue, a crescent and a star. The red and white stripes stand for the equal status in the Federation of the member states and the Federal government. The union of carton of dark blue in the upper quarter of the flag next to the staff represents the unity of the people of Malaysia. The union contains the crescent which is the symbol of Islam, and the star with its 14 points symbolises the unity of the 13 states of the Federation with the Federal government. The yellow of the crescent and the star is the royal colour of the hereditary Malay Rulers.

 Coat-of-Arms

The Malaysian Coat-of-Arms depicts the equal status of the 13 Federation members and the Federal government.

The Coat-of-Arms has a 14-pointed star representing the equal status of the 13 Federation members and the Federal government. The star and the crescent are traditional symbols of Islam, the official religion of Malaysia. The five dagger-like keris represent the former Unfederated Malay States, namely Johor, Kedah, Kelantan, Perlis, and Terengganu; while the four former Federated Malay States of Negeri Sembilan, Pahang, Perak and Selangor are represented by the four centre panels, the permutation of whose colours represent their respective colours -- red, black and yellow for Negeri Sembilan; black and white for Pahang; black, white and yellow for Perak; and red and yellow for Selangor. The left hand division of the shield represents the state of Pulau Pinang, and the right-hand division with the Melaka tree, the state of Melaka. The states of Sabah and Sarawak are respectively represented on the lower left and right sections, while in the centre is the Hibiscus flower, the national flower of Malaysia. The tigers on both sides of the shield are retained from the earlier armorial ensign of the Federation of Malaya, and prior to that of the Federated Malay States. The yellow colour of the scroll containing the motto in Roman and Jawi script is the royal colour of the rulers.

Colours of the Afghan Flag and its meaning

BLACK is the time period of the three Anglo-Afghan wars between 1839-1919, in which Afghanistan fought three brutal wars with the British. Afghanistan was never a colony of the British or any other country but Britain had control of the Afghan foreign affairs, until August 19,1919.
RED is blood and war, the struggle for freedom and also represents poverty, hardship.
GREEN means Peace and symbolizes the colour of Islam.

State flag of the TRNC

It was chosen in a competition, which was held to find a state flag

Flag used initialy by the TRNC

The flag of Turkey is the TRNC's national flag. This is because it is the flag  of the Turkish people as well as having links with their Ottoman heritage.

The red colour intially represented the 'west' in the Turkic colour symbols, however since the Turks had been in many battles through out their long history the colour began to represent the Turkish blood. The moon and the star intialy was anciant Turkic symbols, since the Turks were key as the Gazi's of the faith during the many crusades it became a representation of Islam.

http://www.premier.gouv.qc.ca/secteur/bienvenue_quebec/symboles_emblemes_en.htm - http://www.premier.gouv.qc.ca/secteur/bienvenue_quebec/symboles_emblemes_en.htm

On January 21, 1948, at 3 p.m., the Fleurdelisé replaced the Union Jack on the tower of the Parliament Building in Québec City, thereby becoming the official flag of Québec.

The flag adopted the white cross on a blue background used by the French navy in the early days of the colony. Its fleurs-de-lis pointed toward the centre, recalling a flag said to have accompanied Montcalm's army during its victory in 1758 over the British troops at Fort Carillon (now Ticonderoga, New York). Because the original Carillon flag commemorated one of the last great French victories, it became an important symbol in Québec, and, from June 24, 1848 onward, was part of all National Holiday parades and celebrations. In recognizing the Fleurdelisé as the Québec flag, the National Assembly, by a unanimous vote of its members, gave official status to more than four centuries of history and tradition.

Hi Mila.
Great topic.
Don't think i had seen the Bosnian flag before, don't know how it
managed to slip my awareness, but must say i like it, quite unusual.
How is it that the islamic symbolism was dropped or not used,
considering it's a common occurrence for other islamic countries?
find it kinda odd. Confused

The other thing that caught my attention was in the flag of the
federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, specifically the green shield
that you specified as the Lillicum Bosniacum, well, correct me if i'm
wrong, but always knew that as being a 'masonic' symbol?? *unsure*
(it's also in the medieval Bosnian flag)

i typed the above out, before i saw Raider's post about the
Fleur-de-Lys being connected with Capets.. is the same being
asked as me, cos i really don't know who the fark, the capets are??
.. and what's more Mila, it don't look like no 'lily' to me.

ok.. Maju's got me on a mind bender now.. so it's a Greek symbol..
why am i not surprised.. our symbols are always getting ripped
off hehe Tongue One example is the nazi swastika.. i guess the
freemasons couldn't come up with any new ideas too *rolleyes*

i should read the entire thread before attempting to post lol..
cos i've just realised Akritas beat me to it..

have to bloody think of plan B now.. hmmm

Byzantine flag

According to the history Michael VIII Paleologue adopted this
symbol after he had reconquered Constantinople from the
Crusaders in 1261.  It represented looking towards the East
(Asia Minor, traditional power center of the Byzantine-government
in exile after the IVth Crusade) and theWest (newly reconquered
land in Europe.)
The double-headed eagle had in the two centuries of Paleologue
rule become identified not just with the dynasty but with the
Empire itself and, more generally, with institutions and cultural
ideas outside the Byzantine Empire that still remained centered
on Constantinople.
Most obvious of these is the Greek Orthodox Church, centered in
theory in Istanbul to this day, and so it is not surprising that the
Church would use the flag.

Flag of Cyprus

The flag of Cyprus was officially adopted on August 16, 1960.
Ater gaining independence from a century of British rule, Cyprus
now hoists this symbolic flag. The island is a copper shade
representative of its name, Cyprus - the Greek word for copper.
The crossed green olive branches symbolize the hoped for peace
between the Turks and the Greeks.

I should add the CYprus flag was designed by a Turkish Cypriot.  I'd like it to be used by all Cypriots.

The Turkish flag.
The Crescent and star although being Muslim symbols have their Turkic roots deeper in history and were used by pre-Islamic Gokturks on their coins for example.  The ottoman flags used to always be green but they suddenly all changed to red for an unknown reason - maybe it was to do with the blood red at the battle o Mohacs...

In ancient Turkic mythology there is a crescent moon present and a star - but also the hidden symbol, the sun (rest of the moon).  There is the presence of an eclipse in the Turkish flag..
