Snot eel chokes killers with slime

"A new study has found the primitive hagfish, also known as a "snot eel" can defend itself by releasing a noxious slime that chokes would-be predators. The long, thin hagfish are almost blind and have no jaws but use tooth-like rasps to prey on dead and dying fish.  Fossil record suggests hagfish have evolved little over 500 million years.

Researchers from The University of Western Australia, New Zealand's national museum Te Papa and Massey University in Auckland recorded underwater footage which reveals for the first time, the hagfish repelling sharks and bony fish using its gooey defence mechanism...."

Study finds ‘withdrawal’ protein

"Users of heroin and other addictive opioids may be spared from distressing withdrawal symptoms in the future thanks to a research breakthrough by University of Sydney scientists.

In an article just published in Nature Neurosciencethe researchers describe for the first time a protein in nerve cells that drives the withdrawal response - a complex and intensely unpleasant syndrome that includes chills, sweating, cramps, elevated heart rate and blood pressure and increased sensitivity to pain...."

Law of nature refuted

"One of the laws of nature may vary across the Universe, according to a study published today in the journal Physical Review Letters.

One of the most cherished principles in science - the constancy of physics - may not be true, according to research carried out at the University of New South Wales (UNSW), Swinburne University of Technology and the University of Cambridge.

The study found that one of the four known fundamental forces, electromagnetism - measured by the so-called fine-structure constant and denoted by the symbol ‘alpha' - seems to vary across the Universe....."

Greenhouse gases beat ozone hole

"One set of human-created gases is starting to relinquish its hold on Antarctic climate as another group of emissions produced by human activity is starting to take hold, according to a paper inNature Geoscience, co-authored by ARC Laureate Fellow Professor Matthew England, co-director of the UNSW Climate Change Research Centre.

The review paper highlights how the influence on Southern Hemisphere climate of the Antarctic ozone hole is slowly dissipating and will be progressively overtaken by human-induced emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases...."

Breast cancer risk ‘not equal’

"Mothers, sisters and daughters from breast cancer families with known genetic mutations do not all share the same high risk of developing the disease, according to a new international study involving the University of Melbourne.

Women with the breast cancer genetic mutations BRCA1 or BRCA2 are at least 10 times more likely to develop breast cancer than the average woman.

The new study found that women who do not have a genetic mutation, but are closely related to women who do have genetic mutations are at an average risk of developing the disease...."

Violent games ‘dehumanising’

"New research by Dr Brock Bastian from UQ's School of Psychology has found evidence that playing violent video games leads players to see themselves, and their opponents, as lacking in core human qualities such as warmth, open-mindedness, and intelligence.

In a recently published paper in the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, Dr Bastian and his co-authors looked at whether the experience of cyber-violence had dehumanising consequences for the self-concept of game players and well as their opponents.

Dr Bastian said given his findings, it was not surprising that many people were concerned about the effects of playing violent video games, especially when they appeared to reflect changes in people's behaviour, emotions, and cognitions in ways consistent with a loss of humanity......"

Heart cells grown in laboratories

"Heart disease is the leading cause of death in Australia and now, in a major boost for drug development, scientists will be able to mimic its effects in a petri dish after identifying a new, reliable way of producing heart cells in the laboratory.

Published in the prestigious journal, Nature Methods, the Monash University-led research shows how human heart cells can be consistently produced from embryonic stem cells, creating a potentially inexhaustible source for research and drug discovery....."

How the Epstein Barr virus kills

"Although we don’t realize it, almost all of us are exposed to Epstein Barr Virus (EBV), often through kissing. Around 10-20 per cent of those exposed will develop glandular fever, known colloquially as “kissing disease”. A very small number will develop blood cancers* later in life. For the unfortunate few born with the rare immunodeficiency known as X-linked lymphoproliferative disease (XLP), infection with the saliva-borne virus can be fatal.

Australian immunologists have discovered exactly why EBV is so catastrophic for people with XLP. While their finding does not point to an immediate cure for XLP, it does give us the insight we need to enhance normal immunity to EBV in the future – with vaccines or prophylactic medicines...."

Protecting boys against HPV

"Boys and young men should be vaccinated against human papillomavirus (HPV) to help protect against anal, penile and head and neck cancers and to benefit women’s health says Director of La Trobe University’s Australian Research Centre in Sex, Health and Society (ARCSHS) Professor Marian Pitts.

‘It’s an equity issue, we are currently denying a life saving vaccine to half of our young people, and keeping them in the dark about how the HPV vaccine could protect them from cancers, just as it does for our young women,’ Professor Pitts says.

‘Most people now know that HPV is a major cause of cervical cancer, but few realise that the virus can affect other sites, including the ano-genital tract and cancers of the head and neck.’..."

Giant Asteroid Hurtles Closer to Earth Than Moon Next Week

By Tariq Malik -Published November 04, 2011| Space.com

A huge asteroid about the size of an aircraft carrier will zoom past our planet next week, flying between the Earth and the orbit of the moon when it flies by on Tuesday (Nov. 8).

The space rock, called asteroid 2005 YU55, poses no threat to the Earth but will be observed by excited astronomers around the world. It's about 1,300 feet (400 meters) wide, round and blacker than coal, NASA scientists said.

Largest Sunspot in Years Observed on the Sun

By Clara Moskowitz -Published November 04, 2011| Space.com

One of the largest sunspots in years has appeared on the sun, darkening part of its glowing face.

The massive sunspot, called AR1339, is about 50,000 miles long, and 25,000 miles wide, reports SpaceWeather.com. For comparison, Earth itself is only 8,000 miles wide.

The sunspot behemoth isn't yet facing our planet, but was spotted Thursday, Nov. 3, by NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) satellite. The spacecraft's photos of the giant sunspot show the solar region as it comes into view on the northeastern edge, or limb, of the sun.
