Rare Galaxy from 'Dawn of Time' PhotographedPublished December 24, 2011| Space.com
The blob-shaped galaxy, called GN-108036, is about 12.9 billion light-years away and appears as it existed just 750 million years after the universe began. The universe, for comparison, is about 13.7 billion years old." |

Dingoes use tools to solve novel problems
Dingoes have been filmed using tools to solve problems in an innovative way. |
Dingoes are more intelligent than we think - they have been filmed opening latched gates to get food.DINGOES ARE MUCH SMARTER than humans give them credit for, according to new research.
While the native canines are known for their smarts in hunting skills, they are also able to figure out ways to snatch morsels of food that includes rudimentary tool use.
Staff at the Dingo Discovery and Research Centre in Melbourne found nametags had been mysteriously and repeatedly removed from the fence wall of a steel mesh dingo enclosure, from a height of 1.7m. Dr Bradley Smith, who was doing PhD research on cognition and behaviour indingoes at the time, discovered the nametags were in fact being snagged by 18-month-old dingo Sterling.
Intrigued, Bradley set up small plastic envelope containing dry dog food was placed in a similar position to that of the missing name tags, and pointed cameras on the area to catch any unusual behaviour. To his surprise, the footage showed Sterling climbed a table and lent against a fence to get to the food..... |

Pigeons on par with monkeys in maths ability
Pigeons can count just as well as rhesus monkeys, say researchers. |
Bird brains can do numbers. That's the conclusion after pigeons showed off their maths abilities by putting numbers in the correct order, rivalling monkeys in a test. Tuning into abstract concepts like numerical rules is an ability we humans have generally restricted to ourselves and our closest primate relatives, but it is becoming clear we have underestimated other species' abilities. "We show that pigeons can learn abstract numerical rules and apply them to numbers they have never seen before," said lead researcher Damian Scarf of the University of Otago in Dunedin, New Zealand, of the study published today in Science. Peck the touch screen Scarf and his colleagues now report that pigeons can order numbers 1, 2 and 3. To do this, the pigeons were tested with three images containing one, two or three objects and pecked their answers using a touch screen. The correct response, putting the images in ascending order (ie 1 > 2 > 3), rewarded the avian students with a wheat treat. After prolonged training, the scientists examined the birds to see if this was simply rote learning, or if they had really grasped the concept. They presented the pigeons with images containing 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 or 9 objects. The birds proved up to the task. "If the pigeons have learnt an abstract rule then they should be able to respond to these novel pairs of numbers correctly," said Scarf; remarkably, they did. The response of the birds was indistinguishable from that of two rhesus monkeys that had been previously trained on this task.... |

Indonesia Volcano Eruption Sparks Panic Among Villagers | News Core-Published December 27, 2011
JAKARTA – One of Indonesia's most active volcanoes erupted Tuesday, spewing clouds of ash and panicking villagers but no evacuation has been ordered so far, a government vulcanologist said. The first eruption at Mount Lokon was at 3:07am local time, followed by two more bursts within minutes, Farid Bina told AFP from a monitoring post near the volcano on Sulawesi island. "The eruption was heard as far as five kilometers [three miles] away, causing panic among villagers living close to the volcano," he said, adding that winds blew volcanic ash to villages up to three miles (5km) to the east and northeast. |

Brain size predicts Alzheimer's-like changes
The results of a method to compute cortical thickness (colour coded) shows how the disease induces brain decay. Black represents 0 mm thickness, purple represents 3 mm and white-yellow represents 6 mm. |
People with smaller structures in certain regions of the brain are more likely to experience cognitive decline, consistent with early symptoms of Alzheimer's disease, new research suggests. Understanding when these structures of the brain change will help reshape our understanding of preclinical Alzheimer's disease, and the physiological changes that occur long before clinical symptoms appear. It's hoped that this will enable researchers to identify people who, though they currently appear healthy, are likely to develop Alzheimer's disease in the future. "This may be a valuable method for early detection. It's most likely going to be useful in research at this point," said co-author Bradford Dickerson, a neurologist at Harvard University in the U.S. of the study published in the current issue of Neurology. Years ahead of Alzheimer's symptoms Physiological changes linked to Alzheimer's disease begin to occur years, even decades, before symptoms begin to show. This preclinical period can be identified by amyloid-β deposits, which are insoluble proteins that accumulate and interfere with neuron functioning in the brain...... |

Earth Has Other Moons, Astronomers Say
Published December 21, 2011 | FoxNews.com
Maybe Frank should have sang "Fly Me to the Moons." Scientists studying satellites orbiting the planet have come to an astounding conclusion: Earth has multiple moons at any given time, the MIT Technology Review reported. Mikael Granvik, along with colleagues at the University of Hawaii, first discovered a mysterious body orbiting the Earth in 2006. The object -- or RH120 as it was known -- turned out to be a tiny asteroid just a few meters across. Moreover, it was a natural satellite just like our moon. |

Giant Alien Prawn Invasion Threatens Texan Coast
Published December 27, 2011 | Associated Press
A gigantic, alien species of prawn is beginning to appear in Texas coastal waters, posing a threat to native species of shrimp and crab. The Asian tiger prawn is a foot-long crustacean that not only devours the same food as their smaller shrimp but also dine on their smaller cousins, as well as crab and young oysters. |

Twin Probes to Orbit Moon, Study Gravity Field
Published December 26, 2011 | Associated Press
The moon has come a long way since Galileo first peered at it through a telescope. Unmanned probes have circled around it and landed on its surface. Twelve American astronauts have walked on it. And lunar rocks and soil have been hauled back from it. Despite being well studied, Earth's closest neighbor remains an enigma. Over the New Year's weekend, a pair of spacecraft the size of washing machines are set to enter orbit around it in the latest lunar mission. Their job is to measure the uneven gravity field and determine what lies beneath -- straight down to the core. |
